Iraq at a Glance, January 2026

Iraq is leaving behind the effects of three decades of political turmoil and armed conflicts that deeply impacted its people. The country has been experiencing relative stability and is advancing towards sustainable development, including solutions for remaining internally displaced people (IDPs). Iraq remains host to significant numbers of refugees and asylum-seekers, pursuing a policy of inclusion of refugees and asylum-seekers in national services. This notwithstanding, the country still faces protracted humanitarian and development needs. In this context, UNHCR’s vision is that refugees and asylum-seekers continue to have access to and enjoy protection and that forcibly displaced populations find solutions, in particular through inclusion in public services and access to economic opportunities, as well as through voluntary return.
