Situation Overview
• UNHCR is aware of 41,442 refugees from Lebanon who have arrived in Iraq since the escalation of hostilities in Lebanon through various points including the Al-Qaim border crossing (22,316) and airports in Baghdad (15,110) and Najaf (4,016).
• UNHCR is actively monitoring and gathering data on the movement of refugees from Lebanon into Iraq, noting that most arrivals are Lebanese nationals. Following the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon on 26 November, UNHCR will continue to monitor what impact this has on the movement of refugees to Iraq.
• In addition to Lebanese refugees arriving to Iraq, some 115 Syrian households have contacted UNHCR online, identifying themselves as Syrians who have arrived in Iraq from Lebanon after the hostilities in Lebanon started and requested to be registered. UNHCR has started their registration in line with existing procedures.
• Most refugees from Lebanon are hosted in Karbala and Najaf.3 The remaining are spread across different Governorates in central and south Iraq, including Babil, Baghdad, and Diyala. Smaller numbers are also reported arriving in Ninewa Hamdaniya, Salah Al-Din, and AlMuthanna (refer to heat map).
