Executive summary

Un Ponte Per..., the Italian Organization for International Solidarity, is providing together and in coordination with other humanitarian actors and local government humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees in Iraq. Within the framework of the project “Strengthening the humanitarian response for Syrian refugees and asylum seeker in Domiz Camp (KRG/Dohuk province) and al-Qa'im camp in Anbar Governorate” funded by OCHA-ERF, (MoU: ERF-DMA- 0511-091), and implemented in partnership with Public Aid Organization (PAO) and Tammuz Organization for Social Development (TOSD), Un Ponte Per...has conducted a field assessment aimed at providing a timely evaluation of the Syrian refugees situation in Iraq. A deeper understanding of the trends and dynamics in the Syrian refugee camps is expected to provide valuable information for future planning on behalf of international actors and local government.

The assessment has been conducted in the Domiz camp, which is situated in the Dohuk Governorate in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Domiz Camp is to date the most populated camp in Iraq. A survey has been carried out in the period 26/08/2013-22/10/2013 and it was followed by five focus group discussions held in the period 1-3/12/2013. Both the survey and the focus group discussions targeted both individuals and families living in the camp. The assessment has been designed in order to detect specifically socio-economic and employment trends. This paper analyses and discusses the findings of the assessment and aims at contributing to a better understanding of the needs and conditions of Syrian refugees in Iraq.
