Shelter
3.3 million people live in informal settlements due to the conflict. 27,600 houses have been found damaged in Ninewah, Salah Al Din and Anbar as a result of the conflict and assessments are ongoing to identify more.
An estimated 50% of IDPs are living in private settings, 26% in camps, 13% in unknown settings and 11% in critical shelter arrangements. IDPs have cited damaged houses (51%) and occupied property (41%) as the main obstacles preventing return to their areas of origin.
Most returnees are living in their habitual residence. However, as people begin to return, disputes over housing, land and property (HLP) rights occured and have caused post-conflict tensions between returnees and host communities. Occupation of properties by other families, changed land boundaries, and lost documentation to prove their claims to property are common HLP problems. In many areas, government records were destroyed and people cannot afford replacement documents.
Flooding
Flooding in central and northern Iraq has led to shelter damage in IDP camps. Over 200,000 people in 24 camps have been affected. Shelters were destroyed in 16 camps and assessments to determine the full extent of the damage are ongoing. In Anbar governorate food supplies and core relief items for over 5,600 people were destroyed and 490 tents were damaged.
