Operational Updates
- In August, WFP provided 32,902 Afghan and Iraqi refugees (7,346 households) with monthly general food assistance through a hybrid combination of in-kind food and cash-based transfers.
- Under in-kind, a total of 427 mt of food consisting of fortified wheat flour (12 kg per person) and vegetable oil (810 ml per person) was distributed.
- Under cash-based transfers, in August, WFP conducted a cash transfer value adjustment exercise to ensure its financial assistance meets the current costs of living and essential needs of refugee households across settlements, amid fluctuating exchange rates, persistent inflation and economic challenges in Iran. To mitigate the gap in assistance, as of August, WFP increased its transfer value by 25 percent for men-headed households (MHH) and 20 percent for women-headed households (WHH). Iranian Rials (IRR) 2.5 million (US$ 5.7) per person were disbursed to MHH, while WHH received a slightly higher monthly allocation of IRR 3 million (US$ 6.8) per person due to limited access to work opportunities for women, which may lead to higher levels of food insecurity.
- As part of WFP’s Disability Inclusion Workplan, WFP Iran has been providing additional monthly cash support of IRR 1.5 million (US$ 3.4), to refugees with disabilities across six refugee settlements, on top of their regular aid. Initially, the top-up support was rolled out in Shahid Naseri settlement, in Markazi province, and Mohajerin settlement, in Semnan province. In August, the programme expanded to include Lorestan province in addition to West Azerbaijan, Fars, Khuzestan, Markazi, and Semnan provinces, raising the total number of beneficiaries assisted from 103 in May to 128 persons in August.
- To support the income generation and resilience of 355 refugees (57 percent women and 43 percent men), in August, WFP continued 19 livelihood activities across 17 settlements, including welding, tailoring, baking, and farming.
