UNHCR Middle East Situation: Emergency Flash Update #1 (5 March 2026)

Key Highlights

  • Escalating conflict across South-West Asia and the Middle East continues to affect displacement dynamics and humanitarian operations across the region, with over 300,000 displaced, mostly within their country. Increased cross-border movements have been observed from Lebanon into Syria, while Afghan returns from Iran continue alongside new security and economic pressures. Humanitarian access and operating conditions remain challenging in several locations.

  • The regions already host 24.6 million forcibly displaced people and returnees who face significant protection risks and humanitarian needs, alongside host communities. UNHCR operations continue with adjusted modalities to ensure staff safety and business continuity, while critical activities such as border monitoring, protection services and emergency preparedness remain in place.

  • UNHCR has advanced preparedness across the region and maintains emergency stockpiles for rapid deployment. Core relief items, including family tents, blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, jerry cans and solar lamps, are pre-positioned in regional and country-level warehouses, including in Termez, Uzbekistan, and through UNHCR’s global stockpile network although quantities are limited. Emergency cash assistance would be the primary form of assistance in many countries across the region.

  • UNHCR maintains close coordination with authorities, United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners to support preparedness and response planning and stands ready to support national authorities should humanitarian needs increase.
