IRCS Distributes One-month Food Packages among Quake-affected Families in Miyaneh, Sarab

TEHRAN, 12 November 2019 (IRCS) – Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has begun the distribution of 2,658 food parcels for one-month among the families who have been affected by this week’s earthquake in Miyaneh and Sarab counties, East Azerbaijan.

“Red Crescent has distributed 2,658 food parcels for 72 hours among the affected families until now and it is needed to distribute 2,658 food parcels for one month to the families,” said Hamed Sajjadi, Acting Head of Operation Division of the IRCS Relief and Rescue Organisation.

Considering that Varnakesh and Varzaghan villages in Miyaneh county were damaged mostly by the shaking, the Red Crescent started the distribution from the two villages and has distributed 254 food parcels among the households in Varnakesh.

Following the Miyaneh earthquake on November 8, the Iranian Red Crescent has provided emergency sheltering for 12,320 affected people by setting up 3,080 tents.

Not all people accommodated in tents are earthquake-stricken, and some have left their homes to live in tents because of the fear of the quake, added Sajjadi.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale hit northwestern Iran in Miyaneh County in East Azerbaijan Province on Friday, 8 November 2019, at a depth of 8 km at 02:17 a.m. local time.

The earthquake killed five and injured 584, who mostly received outpatient services. All the casualties were reportedly from Varnakesh Village.
