Iran: Supreme Leader urges Afghanistan to recognize Iran's water rights
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on
the morning of 2 March visited the Hirmand River, the Chahnimeh Reservoir,
the Zehak Dam, and irrigation networks in the Kahak border area in the
northeastern part of Sistan va Baluchistan Province, IRNA reported. Accompanying
officials briefed Khamenei on steps being taken to alleviate the region's
water shortage, and the supreme leader said more must be done to increase
the supply of water for irrigation. Later in the day Khamenei gave a speech
in Zabol in which he urged Afghanistan to fulfill its commitments on supplying
water. "We expect Afghanistan to respect the rights of Iran and the
residents of Sistan va Baluchistan Province to Hirmand River water and
the issue will be followed up seriously by the Islamic Republic of Iran,"
Khamenei added. He noted the difficulties the province is facing and promised
that they will be resolved soon with the cooperation of officials and local
