Iran, Iraq – Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, RCS, ACAPS, OCHA, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 15 November 2017)

  • As of 15 November, local media reported that the earthquake that hit close to the border between Iran and Iraq on 12 November has so far claimed at least 530 lives (most of them in Kermanshah, Iran) and 7 370 wounded people (of which at least 550 in Iraq). Houses and historical buildings have been damaged across eight cities, and 526 villages are severely affected.

  • OCHA reported, as of the same date, that two hospitals have been damaged: Kermanshah's main hospital is running at a reduced capacity, whereas Sarpol-e Zahab hospital is closed. In Sarpol-e Zahab, half of the school facilities have collapsed. Reports indicate that 70 000 people are in need of emergency shelter, and 30% of the affected areas remain without power.

  • In Iraq, with DG ECHO's contribution, WHO has deployed an Immediate Response Team to Sulaimaniyah hospital, to which all critical cases are referred. A tent to expand hospital capacity has been provided.

  • A number of partners, including DG ECHO supported ones, are conducting an inter-cluster assessment mission on the wider impact of the earthquake in affected regions of Iraq. A first line cash response for displaced families whose houses are not habitable is considered.

  • The European Union Civil Protection Mechanism was activated on 13 November upon a request from OCHA regarding structural engineering expertise. One EU expert will be deployed to join the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) Team in Iraq to assess the integrity of two dams affected by the earthquake.
