UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
11 DECEMBER 1986 -

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT HEAVY FLOODING CAUSED BY CONTINUOUS RAINS SINCE END OF NOVEMBER HAS CAUSED LOSS OF LIFE AND EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN SOUTH AND CENTRAL IRAN, THE WORST HIT AREAS BEING THE PROVINCES OF FARS AND
BUSHEHR.

2. OVER 200 PERSONS ARE REPORTED DEAD AND 40,000 MADE HOMELESS. CROPS, TREE PLANTATIONS, WATER AND ELECTRICITY SUPPLIES, ROADS AND BRIDGES HAVE ALL SUFFERED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN AFFECTED AREAS, WITH WATER AND ELECTRICITY ACTUALLY BEING CUT OFF FOR THE PAST TEN DAYS IN BUSHEHR.

3. GOVERNMENT HAS SET UP A SPECIAL DISASTER RELIEF TASK FORCE WHICH, IN CONCERT WITH THE RED CRESCENT, HAS MOBILIZED SUBSTANTIAL RESOURCES AND IS PROVIDING COORDINATION FOR RELIEF EFFORT, INCLUDING ASSISTANCE RECEIVED VOLUNTARY AGENCIES.

4. TO DATE, GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
