UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
10 APRIL 1989

1. LATE MARCH 1989, FLOODS OF HIRMAND AND PARIYAN RIVERS OCCURRED IN EASTERN IRAN NEAR AFGAN BORDER AND SITUATION BECAME CRITICAL SINCE 5 APRIL.

2. 20 VILLAGES REPORTED TOTALLY DESTROYED. 20,000 HA OF WHEAT FARMLANDS COVERED BY WATER. VAST DESTRUCTION OF HOMES, LIVESTOCK AND FARMLANDS.

3. CITY OF ZABOL WITH DOZENS OF VILLAGES ARE SURROUNDED BY STILL RISING FLOOD WATER.

4. PRIME MINISTER ALLOCATED US DLRS 440,000 OF EMERGENCY GRANT. RED CRESCENT SOCIETY AND ARMY HELICOPTERS ARE DEPLOYED IN AFFECTED VILLAGES.

5. UNDRO HAS NOT SO FAR RECEIVED OFFICIAL REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED THAT FLOODS HAD RECEDED AND THAT OFFICIAL ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE WAS AS FOLLOWS:

- 90 VILLAGES AFFECTED
- 5,500 RESIDENTIAL/PUBLIC BUILDINGS DESTROYED

2. GOVT. ESTABLISHED TASK FORCE. POSSIBILITY OF OUTBREAK OF DYSENTERY AND OTHER DISEASES STILL EXIST IF CRISIS RE-EMERGE.

3. LRCS ALLOCATED US DLRS 32,000 OF EMERGENCY FUND FOR LOCAL PURCHASE OF RELIEF SUPPLIES AND LAUNCHED AN APPEAL FOR US DLRS 2 MILLION TO PROVIDE 50,000 AFFECTED PEOPLE WITH FOOD, BLANKETS,
TENTS AND SURVIVAL ITEMS FOR 3 MONTHS.

4. UNDRO HAS NOT SO FAR RECEIVED REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
