This report is based on information provided by the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Iran.

Situation

1. The floods that hit several urban and rural areas of southern Iran provinces on 11 January 2002 (OCHA Situation Report No.1, paragraph 1 refers) caused 470 billion Rials (approx. USD 59.06 million) financial damages as well as the loss of 11 lives.

2. The financial damages of the floods are estimated as follows:

National Response

3. The emergency search and rescue operation is completed. The affected population of 59 villages in Khuzestan and 30 villages in Bushehr (Fars Province) were evacuated to safe areas. The Government has also distributed immediate relief items, including food, clothes, tents and blankets to the affected populations.

4. The Government of Iran has not appealed for international assistance. Existing resources will be used to cover the damages.

5. In view of the above, no further situation report is envisaged at this stage. OCHA remains in close contact with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Iran.
