An earthquake of 5.6 M at a depth of 15 km occurred in Khoy County (West Azerbaijan Province, north-west Iran) on 5 October at 00.21 UTC (03.51 local time). The epicentre was located very close to Khoy City, about 65 km east of the border between Iran and eastern Turkey, about 70 km south of the border between Iran and Nakhchivan Region of Azerbaijan, and about 115 south-west of the border between Iran and southern Armenia.

USGS PAGER estimates that up to 108,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and 206,000 people to strong shaking. According to media reports, the earthquake was felt across eastern Turkey, southern Armenia, as well as in Nakhchivan Region of Azerbaijan.

In Iran, media report that at least 276 people have been injured across West Azerbaijan Province, and 200 houses have been slightly damaged.
