Iran - Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, IRNA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 17 March 2022)

  • An earthquake of 5.8 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in southern Iran on 16 March at 23.15 UTC (17 March at 2.45 local time). The epicentre was located in the Hormozgan Province, north of the coast of the Persian Gulf, approximately 155 km west of Bandar Abbas City and 345 km south-east of Shiraz City. An aftershock of 4.5 M at the same depth at 23.27 UTC was recorded in the area.
  • USGS PAGER estimates, for the 5.8 M event, that up to 2,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 24,000 to strong shaking.
  • The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports, as of 17 March, a damaged religious building in Lavar Din Village and a number of power outages across Koukherd, Jinnah and Mehran Bastak Villages.
