Global Emergency Overview Weekly Picks, 28 March 2019

Iran

Heavy rains, causing floods and landslides, have affected a total of ten cities in northeast Iran and ten governorates in northern and eastern Iraq.

In Iran some 60,000 people are displaced, 10,800 of of whom are currently residing in emergency shelters. Infrastructure including roads, agricultural fields and houses have been severely damaged. At least 31 people have been killed and over 100 injured.

In Iraq the impact is lower with most damage on critical infrastructure reported in Wasit and and Diyala. All provinces face high risks of landslides and collapse of buildings as many urban and rural areas are flooded.

Mali

At least 160 civilians were killed during an attack conducted by Dogon militias in Mopti region on 23 March. This is the deadliest attack led against civilians in Mali since the beginning of the crisis in 2012.

At least 2,000 people have been displaced since and acts of retaliations against the Dogon communities have already been registered, with six civilians killed between 25 and 26 March.

Niger

Boko Haram led several attacks on villages in Diffa region on 23 and 26 March, leading to the death of at least 32 civilians.

During the events, houses were also burnt down and livestock animals were killed. Humanitarian needs are likely to include shelter, food, health and protection.

In 2019, Niger, Nigeria and Chad have seen an increase in Boko Haram activities.
