The karst region of Gunungkidul presents unique challenges for agriculture, particularly due to the limited availability of water resources. The porous nature of the limestone soil results in the absence of natural springs and readily accessible groundwater. This situation is exacerbated by climate change, which leads to prolonged dry seasons and increases the cost of irrigation. Consequently, many farmers are forced to abandon their fields, threatening the sustainability of their livelihoods.
A baseline survey on smart mist irrigation systems in Temon Hamlet, Giripurwo, Gunungkidul Regency, provides insights into the challenges, needs, and potential of agricultural water management in this area. The survey, which involved 26 respondents, mostly members of groups whose primary occupations are farmers, farm laborers, or livestock breeders, identified key issues such as drought, pest infestations, and limited capital. The lack of adequate water resources also poses a major obstacle to optimal water management for agriculture.
These challenges significantly impact farmers' incomes, especially during the dry season when agricultural activities come to a halt. Therefore, innovative solutions are needed to protect the most at-risk communities and build greater resilience in the region.
Smart Mist Irrigation System with Rainwater Harvesting is an innovative technology designed to improve water use efficiency in agriculture, especially in areas with limited water availability. This system operates by spraying water in the form of fine mist particles, which helps increase the micro-humidity around plants, reduce evaporation, and ensure more even and efficient water distribution. Compared to traditional irrigation methods such as surface or drip irrigation, mist irrigation can save up to 50% of water due to more controlled water use and minimized losses from surface runoff or excessive infiltration.
In addition, this system is integrated with soil moisture sensors and IoT (Internet of Things) based automation, so that watering can be adjusted in real-time to plant needs. Another advantage is its ability to improve the growth quality of plants, especially for horticultural crops such as chili, tomatoes, and melons that require optimal humidity levels. By utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar panels, smart mist irrigation is also an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for modern agricultural.
Implementing this system can have a transformative impact on local farmers, equipping them with the resources needed to overcome climate-related water shortages. By reducing dependence on costly water supplies and increasing agricultural productivity, farmers can secure higher incomes and build resilience against environmental challenges. This initiative is more than just an irrigation system; it represents a step toward sustainable, climate-adaptive farming that strengthens food security and promotes long-term economic growth. By adopting the Smart Mist Irrigation with Rainwater Harvesting System, we can create a future where farmers thrive despite changing climate conditions.
