Cianjur - Earthquake is one of the disasters that could potentially occur in Cianjur Regency of West Java. It is because Cianjur lies on the Cugenang fault, which is currently active and prone to shifting. In an effort to increase preparedness capacity in disaster risk reduction, especially for earthquake hazard, YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) in collaboration with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur Regency carried out a simulation on earthquake emergency response in Nyalindung Village of Cugenang District on Saturday (11/5).

The simulation was held based on the Disaster Management Plan and Contingency Plan documents which had been formulated by the Nyalindung Village Disaster Task Force and YEU. Besides, it was also as a follow-up action from the series of disaster risk reduction training that had previously been carried out.

The simulation began on 11 May 2024 at 10.15 am local time and was attended by representatives from the BPBD Cianjur, Mr. Wawan Setiawan and Mr. Herman Suherman, the Disaster Task Force of Nyalindung Village and YEU. The simulation began with the sounding of an alarm as a sign of an earthquake, followed by communication and coordination between the Nyalindung Disaster Task Force and BPBD. Afterwards, the Disaster Task Force evacuated and handled injured persons as well as operated a public kitchen for earthquake-affected communities.

According to Mr. Wawan Setiawan from BPBD Cianjur, this simulation was very helpful and useful for the Nyalindung community, especially for those who were affected by an earthquake. The community were more aware of the impact of earthquakes and they can reduce the risk of disaster. “We really appreciate the YEU team that has accompanied and assisted Nyalindung Village in preparing DRR documents, Contingency Plans and organizing emergency response simulation,” said Wawan.

The simulation of the earthquake was chosen as the Cianjur region, including Nyalindung Village, is an earthquake-prone area. Based on the disaster risk assessment of BPBD Cianjur, there are 10 disasters highly likely to occur in the area, but only the earthquake is the focus of the simulation. Considering the previous earthquake on 21 November 2022 which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of damaged houses, then the simulation of earthquake emergency response was carried out with the aim of equipping the Village Disaster Task Force, local government and communities with the importance of understanding disaster preparedness and risk reduction. Additionally, it is expected that in the future this simulation can be a regular effort in Nyalindung Village.
