Secretary-General to leave Tuesday for Asian tour

Secretary-General Kofi Annan leaves Tuesday leaving for an international tour that will include a summit meeting of the United Nations and members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as a stopover in East Timor.
Mr. Annan will first pay an official visit to Thailand on Thursday and Friday, and will then attend the opening of the tenth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD X) on Saturday. He will address the UN-ASEAN meeting the same day.

The Secretary-General goes on to Singapore on Sunday and Indonesia on Tuesday. On Thursday, 17 February, he will visit the United Nations Mission in East Timor, travelling as well to Atambua in West Timor, weather permitting, his spokesman Fred Eckhard, told journalists today.

The Secretary-General then travels to Australia for an official visit, starting with Darwin and Sydney on 19 February, and going on to the capital, Canberra, on the 20th.

He will conclude the trip in Wellington, New Zealand, where he will on 22 February before returning to New York on Thursday 24 February.
