CONTEXT
High quality data form the foundation for strong public health policies and programs. For over 30 years, the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program, funded by USAID, has collected, analyzed, and disseminated data on population, health, HIV, and nutrition through more than 400 surveys in over 90 countries.
The DHS Program demonstrates USAID's commitment to evidence-based policymaking, data transparency, and openness. It enables monitoring health trends and setting priorities for funding, interventions, and policies. The Indonesia DHS (IDHS) is in its ninth year of implementation since 1987. The United States and Indonesia are committed to safeguarding the health of Indonesians, particularly women and children, through continued collection of accurate and high-quality data.
2023-2024 INDONESIA DEMOGRAPHIC AND HEALTH SURVEY (2023-2024 IDHS)
Data collected through the DHS inform the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs. The 2023-2024 IDHS provides current information on fertility levels, maternal and child mortality, marriage, fertility preferences, awareness and use of family planning methods, and awareness and behaviors regarding HIV/AIDS and other health issues.
The 2023-2024 IDHS was conducted with 13,600 urban and rural households, including 15,000 women aged 15-49. The sample size of the survey ensures that the data collected is nationally representative and reflects the needs of urban and rural areas. Indonesia’s National Agency for Research and Innovation leads the implementation of the Indonesia DHS, with technical assistance from USAID.
The survey uses two instruments for data collection: the Household Questionnaire and the Woman’s Questionnaire, which are adapted for Indonesia from standard DHS-8 questionnaires. Data was collected from November 2023 to June 2024 using a computer-assisted personal interviewing system.
KEY RESULTS
The results from the 2023-2024 IDHS will provide up-to-date information on demographic and health indicators. The Indonesia National Research and Innovation Agency, the Ministry of Population and Family Development/National Family Planning Coordinating Board, the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Health, and USAID will release the final report in 2025. USAID will assist in the dissemination of survey results at the national and provincial levels.
