This situation report is based on information received from the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office in Jakarta, provided by SATKORLAK PBP (Provincial Coordination Body for Disaster and IDPs Management) Nanggroe Aceh Darusalam, SATLAK Aceh Tenggara (District Coordination Body for Disaster and IDPs Management), SATLAK Malang, Department of Social Affairs (DinSos), and Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), IOM (International Organization for Migration) and WFP (World Food Programme).

Situation

Aceh Tenggara District, NAD

1. On 18 October, heavy rains caused a flash flood and a number of landslides. Search and rescue teams continue to look for more survivors. Some survivors have been found wounded under the thick mud and debris. The injured are receiving treatment at the nearby hospital and puskesmas (district clinics). SATLAK confirmed that 14 people are dead and 3 people are missing.

2. As many as 400-500 houses were destroyed, and about 2,000 displaced persons are now homeless. Mud has flooded public facilities, such as mosques (3 units), school buildings (3 units) and local markets, to a depth of approximately 1 meter. Livelihood activities are at a standstill. Most padi and cornfields in the affected areas have been swept away by the floods.

Malang District, East Java

3. The floodwater that inundated villages in 4 sub-districts (namely Tirtoyudo, Sumbermanjing Wetan, Dampit and Ampilgading), has completely receded. Many of the affected households have returned back to their homes, except those whom have lost their houses. Out of the 284 houses damaged, 27 houses were heavily damaged or destroyed.

4. Public facilities damaged include two schools, one mosque, two bridges, dikes, as well as a dam in Ampelgading Sub-District. Approximately 400-500 hectares of paddy fields are expected to experience crop failure due to the disaster.

National Response

Aceh Tenggara District, NAD

5. SATLAK reported that health post, toilet and public kitchen facilities have been established.

6. SATKORLAK on behalf of the Government of Nanggroe Aceh Darusalam expressed high appreciation for the prompt response provided by the UN, IOM , IFRC and NGOs.

Malang District

7. The district government continues to provide basic emergency relief to the affected communities.

8. PMI will provide basic food items, for at least the next 7 days, for those whom have lost their houses. PMI continues to monitor the situation.

International Response

9. The Government of Indonesia has not formally requested international assistance so far.

10. WFP reported that emergency communications have been set up in Semadam, Aceh Tenggara District.

11. The following immediate needs are required for Aceh Tenggara District: food (including for children under 5), drinking and clean water, sanitation facilities, and non-food items such as family kits, hygiene kits, and clothing.

12. OCHA is in close contact with relevant government authorities and the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Jakarta, and will provide further information as required.
