Jokowi to visit Mount Agung evacuees in Klungkung

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to visit on Tuesday afternoon a number of residents taking shelter in Klungkung, a Bali regency that is hosting the second largest number of evacuees who fled their homes in anticipation of Mount Agung's possible eruption.

Jokowi and First Lady Iriana will visit a shelter in Swecapura sports hall, which is one of Klungkung's 162 camps hosting a total of 19,456 evacuees.

Air Force helicopter Superpuma will take Jokowi to Klungkung on Tuesday at noon after he wraps up a visit to Buleleng regency to distribute land certificates to people in Buleleng, the Palace said in a press release.

In Klungkung, Jokowi is also scheduled to visit an emergency response station to see how authorities are preparing for the possible eruption.

As of Tuesday, at least 57,428 people had fled their homes in danger zones in Bali and were now taking refuge in 357 shelters set up by local government's in nine regencies and municipalities, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Karangasem regency, where Mount Agung is located, is housing the largest number of evacuees, with 21,280 people spread across 84 shelters.

Thousands of other evacuees are taking shelter in other camps in Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Denpasar, Gianyar, Jembrana and Tabanan.

Officials announced the highest possible alert level on Friday following increased volcanic activity, and told people to stay at least nine kilometers away from the crater. (ipa)
