Joint statement by Jack Straw and Australian Foreign Minister Downer on Aceh

JWe deeply regret the breakdown of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in Aceh. The UK, Australia and the international community as a whole support Indonesia's territorial integrity. But a lasting solution to Aceh's problems can only be achieved through peaceful means. The Agreement still represents the best framework on which to resolve the conflict consistent with democratic principles and respect for human rights.
The overwhelming desire of the people of Aceh is to live in peace and we urge both the Indonesian Government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) to return quickly to the negotiating table in order to find a political solution to the problem. We call on the Indonesian Armed Forces to ensure full respect for human rights and to show maximum restraint while they carry out operations in Aceh.
