This report has been developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on information provided by National Coordination Board for the Disaster Management (BAKORNAS PB), Department of Health, Provincial Coordination Unit for the Disaster Management (SATKORLAK PB) of Bengkulu and West Sumatera, District Coordination Unit for the Disaster Management (SATLAK PB) Mentawai Islands, UN agencies, and NGOs.

SITUATION

1. As of 24 September 2007, SATLAK PB Mentawai Islands reported that school activities have not yet begun in some badly-affected areas because majority of schools are damaged and teachers have been displaced. Local government of Mentawai Islands reported that at least 44 schools have been heavily damaged, including 36 elementary schools, three junior high schools, three senior high schools and two kindergartens.

2. SATKORLAK PB Bengkulu reported that the verification process of damaged houses and other infrastructures is underway. The Agency identified some villages along the coastline that will be permanently relocated to the higher ground. SATKORLAK PB Bengkulu reported a need for psychosocial support for IDPs, traumatized by the major earthquakes and multiple aftershocks.

3. The total casualties of the earthquakes is 25 persons, while the estimated damage figures are as follows:

NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. Governor of Bengkulu visited Lais sub district of Bengkulu Utara district to verify data of damaged infrastructures and evaluate the needs and response measures. The West Sumatera government is to complete an evacuation system for its coastline inhabitants.

5. Department of Health of West Sumatera has deployed a medical team to Mentawai Islands on 24 September 2007.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSES

6. UNDP is assisting the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) on the preparation of Damage Loss Assessment of the Sumatera Earthquake, covering Bengkulu, West Sumatera and Jambi provinces. In the initial report submitted on 21 September, 48,280 houses are damaged, including 23,287 totally damaged, 4,862 moderately damaged and 20,131 slightly damaged. Based on data collected up to 19 September, the total estimated damage and loss is IDR 1,510.8 billion (USD 165,5 million), in which 55% occurred in Bengkulu province, and 45% in West Sumatera province. The Sector damage and loss figures are estimated as follows: - Housing sector: 30.65%
- Social sector: 26.91%
- Infrastructure sector: 18.73%
- Government sector: 18.70%
- Economic sector: 5.01%

7. As of 24 September 2007, UNICEF has delivered 566 family tents, ten school tents, 15 water bladders, 900 hygiene kits, 900 domestic cooking sets, 900 tarpaulins, 1,500 units of 20-litre jerry can, 1,500 units of 10-litre jerry can, 3,000 olyset (anti mosquito) nets, and 900 bottles of water purification to Bungku Utara and Muko-Muko district of Bengkulu province. Meanwhile, 100 family tents, 150 school tents, 4,000 hygiene kits, 2,000 domestic cooking sets, 4,000 tarpaulins, 2,000 units of 10-litre jerry can, 2,000 olyset (anti mosquito) nets, and 200 bottles of water purification were dispatched from its warehouse in Medan to Pesisir Selatan and Mentawai Islands districts, West Sumatera province. UNICEF plans to deliver a total of 2,000 bottles of water purification in West Sumatera.

8. Muslim Aid has been providing emergency food aid. Muslim Aid emergency response team has been supporting relief operations since 16 September in four locations in West Sumatera with water purifiers with a capacity of producing pure water at a rate of 4 litters per minute. The team will distribute water purifying tablets and ORS for treating diarrhea.

9. WV has distributed 1,000 cleaning kits, including wheelbarrow, hammer, hoe, shovel, crowbar and saw, in Batiknau, Ketahun, Air Besi sub district of Bengkulu Utara district and in Bengkulu city. WV will complete its assistance by the end of September 2007.

10. The UN HC/RC Office in Jakarta will continue to monitor the situation through direct contact with government and non-government institutions, as well as with the Indonesian Red Cross.
