A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Medan and its surrounding areas on Saturday at 11:24 a.m.

“We were studying in class on the third floor of the Raksana high school when the earthquake shook the building. We told the teacher there was an earthquake and then we ran out of the classroom,” Rizky Fadilah, a student at the school on Jl. Gadjah Mada, Medan, said.

On Friday, at least 13 earthquakes jolted several areas of the province from morning to the afternoon.

Cici Nur Hafizah, a forecaster with the Medan office of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said a large earthquake measuring 5.6 on the richter scale struck the area in mid January, and the earthquakes that hit the area on Friday and Saturday had the same center as the one in January.
