Indonesia - Mount Semeru volcanic eruption, update (MAGMA Indonesia, BNPB) (ECHO Daily Flash of 7 December 2022)

The activity of Mount Semeru, located between the Regencies of Lumajang and Malang (East Java Province) is ongoing and on the morning of 7 December, the ash plume reached 500 m above the crater.

The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BNPB) reports 781 evacuated people in 21 evacuation points, two affected bridges, as well as three km of roads, one educational facility and four places of worship.

Five villages located in four sub-districts have been mostly impacted by pyroclastic flows on 4 December (Sumberurip Village in Pronojiwo District, Sumbersari Village in Rowokangkung District, Sumberwuluh Village and Penanggal Village in Candipuro District and Pasirian Village in Pasirian District).

Local authorities of Lumajang Regency provided a public kitchen to meet the needs of displaced residents.

The alert level of Mount Semeru is still at IV. Activities within a radius of 8 km and in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan river 17 km from the summit of the volcano are not recommended.
