Indonesia: Mount Ruang Eruption - Kepulauan Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro), North Sulawesi (18/04/2024)

Following the eruptions of Mount Ruang in Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) Islands District of North Sulawesi on 16 April 2024, the mountain alert status has been increased to Level IV (the highest level) on 17 April 2024 at 21.00 local time. The Volcanology Agency has advised for no activity within six-kilometer radius from the mountain, which has triggered an evacuation effort by local government and the local community. While there are no immediate reports of casualties, 272 households (828 people), including 113 elderly, 54 under-5 children, 102 children, and 9 people with disability, from Ruang and Tagulandang Islands are directly affected and evacuated to a public facility and extended families’ homes within the district. Local people, especially those who live in the coastal area, have been warned of burning rocks and hot clouds surge. A tsunami warning has also been issued. Sam Ratulangi airport in Manado, the provincial capital, has been temporarily closed as of the morning of 18 April 2024.

Local government has declared an emergency response phase for 14 days, between 16 and 29 April 2024, and provided basic relief assistance that would be complemented by provincial and national government institutions. OCHA continues to monitor the situation as government leads response efforts.
