Pascal Kainic, Laut Nusantara Coordinating Director in Indonesia, told Indonesia Relief that the fishing equipment has been given to the community on Sunday. The equipment includes 100 new iceboxes and 4,000 buoys of various sizes. Additional tools, including fishing nets, hook tools, and boat engines will also be provided.
Providing fishing equipment is part of Laut Nusantara efforts to restore economic activities of Meurebo fishing communities that has been badly destroyed by last December tsunami. The organization, in cooperation with another local NGO such as Bina Swadaya, has a plan to setup a sustainable and integrated fishing communities, including creating their own mini long line fiber boat workshop.
The workshop is still being in preparation phase. Laut Nusantara and local fishermen has reach a common understanding that a fiber glass boat is more suitable for them, as it much stronger, have a long endurance, and easy to repair. © dil
