SITUATION

1. THE INITIAL FLOODS OF 1 MAY HAVE AFFECTED A TOTAL OF 23 VILLAGES WHICH ARE LOCATED IN REMOTE AREAS. THE REPORTED CASUALTIES ARE 42 DEAD AND 3 MISSING. AND 5000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED.

2. THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES, SUPPORTED BY THE ARMED FORCES, HAVE PROVIDED EMERGENCY RELIEF MEASURES.

3. ON 7 MAY FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED IN THE PROVINCE OF BENGKULU, SOUTHERN SUMATRA, AND HAS AFFECTED 12 VILLAGES. 9 PEOPLE ARE REPORTED DEAD WHILE 18 ARE MISSING. 6 BRIDGES WERE DESTROYED, 440 HOUSES AND 2500 ACRES OF PADDY FIELDS ARE INUNDATED.

4. EMERGENCY RESPONSE IS PROVIDED BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

5. DHA IS, THROUGH THE UNDP OFFICE IN JAKARTA, PROVIDING AN EMERGENCY GRANT OF USD 30,000.

6. THE UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IS, TOGETHER WITH THE NATIONAL AUTHORITIES, CONTINUOUSLY MONITORING THE SITUATION.
