1. HEAVY RAINFALLS IN THE FIRST DAYS OF JANUARY 1996 HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS FLOODING IN SUMATRA'S NORTHERN AND EASTERN DISTRICTS IN THE ACEH PROVINCE.

2. ACCORDING TO INFORMATION OF THE UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN JAKARTA ON 4 JANUARY, THE BAKORNAS PB (NATIONAL DISASTER RELIEF AUTHORITY) REPORTED THAT 15 PEOPLE WERE KILLED, 4 MISSING, APPROX 14,600 HOUSEHOLDS HAD TO BE EVACUATED.

SEVEN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRES, 9 BRIDGES, 61 SCHOOLS AND 44 MOSQUES WERE DAMAGED, 80 HOUSES WERE DESTROYED AND APPROX. 8,000 DAMAGED. SOME 1,900 LIVESTOCKS WERE KILLED AND 55,000 HECTARES OF CASH CROP FIELDS DESTROYED.

3. THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ARMED FORCES IMPLEMENTED RESCUE AND EVACUATION MEASURES, SET UP PUBLIC KITCHENS AND DISTRIBUTED 84 TONS OF RICE. THE MINISTRY OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS GRANTED ASSISTANCE VALUED AT APPROX. USD 27,000.

4. AN EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 4.0 ON THE RICHTER SCALE STRUCK WESTERN SUMATRA (15 KM SOUTHEAST OF PADANGPANJANG TOWN) ON 4 JANUARY. NO DAMAGE OR CASUALTIES REPORTED SO FAR.

5. BAKORNAS PB AND THE UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE ARE FOLLOWING THE SITUATION.
