IMPACT

1. AS OF 29 FEB, DEATH TOLL WAS 108 WITH 58 MISSING, 56 SERIOUSLY AND 367 SLIGHTLY INJURED; 1018 HOUSES DESTROYED/SWEPT AWAY, 3180 HOUSES WITH MAJOR AND 845 MINOR DAMAGE. UPDATED FIGURES ON DAMAGE TO PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND INFRASTRUCTURE AVAILABLE WITH DHA. NATIONAL METEOROLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS AUTHORITIES RECORDED 403 AFTERSHOCKS, 4 OF WHICH AT GRADE 6 IN RICHTER SCALE.

DONOR MEETING

2. UPON RETURN OF BAKORNAS ASSESSMENT TEAM FROM AFFECTED AREAS, DONOR MEETING WAS HELD AT UNDP JAKARTA OFFICE ON 27 FEB. IT WAS REPORTED THAT BIAK PORT AND AIRPORT WAS IN OPERATIONAL CONDITION. ASSISTANCE FOR TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM AFFECTED REMOTE AREAS WAS PROVIDED BY ARMED FORCES, DESPITE BAD WEATHER. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE WAS ADEQUATE.

3 PRESENT NEEDS ARE FISHING BOATS/EQUIPMENT, HOUSEHOLD UTENSILS, TEMPORARY SHELTER (PLASTIC SHEETING) FOR VICTIMS, FURTHER FOOD ASSISTANCE, BUILDING MATERIALS FOR HOUSE REPAIRS AND REHABILITATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN ALL AREAS. ALSO REQUIRED ARE TENTS FOR SHELTERING DISPLACED PUBLIC HEALTH FACILITIES AND SCHOOL EQUIPMENT, SINCE SCHOOLS ARE TO START ON 6 MARCH.

4. UNDP INFORMED DONORS OF ITS PROJECT STAFF IN BIAK AS CONTACT PERSON FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

5. BAKORNAS CONDUCTED OVERALL COORDINATION OF RELIEF ACTIVITIES. MINISTRY OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS PROVIDED USD 15,486 FOR FOOD, 34 TONS OF RICE AND OTHER IMMEDIATE RELIEF ITEMS.

6. AS OF 24 FEB, CASH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM INDONESIAN PUBLIC AMOUNTED TO USD 74,588. FOOD ITEMS AND BUILDING MATERIALS WERE ALSO RECEIVED. HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION LED BY FIRST LADY CONTRIBUTED USD 63,938 IN CASH AND 8,000 PIECES OF SARONG (CLOTHING).
