An earthquake of 5.7 M at a depth of 68 km occurred across the southern Sumatra island (western Indonesia) on 22 May at 19.52 UTC (23 May at 2.52 local time). The epicentre was located offshore in the Indian Ocean very close to the coast (less than 2 km) of the Bengkulu province (south-western Sumatra island), approximately 10 km south of the Bengkulu city area.
USGS PAGER estimates that up to 548,000 people were exposed to moderate shaking.
Media report, as of 23 May, seven injured people and 34 damaged buildings across the Bengkulu city area, the provincial capital.
