Indonesia - Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, BNPB, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 10 February 2023)

  • An earthquake of 5.1 M (5.4 M according to Indonesian authorities) occurred on 9 February at 6.28 UTC (or 15.28 local time). The epicentre was located near Jayapura City, on the north-eastern coast of the Indonesian Province of Papua, and close to the border northern border with Papua New Guinea.

  • Two foreshocks of 5.0 M and 4.5 M respectively were recorded in the area.

  • The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports four people died and 2,136 evacuated individuals to 15 shelters across Jayapura City. At least 56 buildings have been damaged, including one hospital.

  • There are no initial reports of any damage or casualties have been reported in Papua New Guinea.
