Jakarta, Indonesia-Relief -- The
Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is currently implementing project to rebuild 700
homes in Kreung Raya, subdistrict of Mesjid Raya, Aceh Besar, near Aceh
main port of Malahayati. American Red Cross supports the project by providing
sanitation and water facilities.
In Kreung Raya, in cooperation with
Jakarta branch of Soroptimist International, Netherlands Red Cross (NRC)
also involved in construction of 195 of houses, wrote International Federation
of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in its latest report.
Kreung Raya or Krueng Raya is a neighborhood or 'kemukiman' consist of three villages. Kemukiman is only a local or traditional name for grouping several villages. Officially, the three villages in the kemukiman of Kreung Raya is part of Mesjid Raya subdistrict (kecamatan).
Previously, in support of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), CRC has announced that the organization committed to rebuild 12,500 homes in Aceh and Nias. In Aceh, the housing project will be focused in the provinces of Aceh Besar and Aceh Jaya, while home building and repair in Nias will be centered in Lahewa and Afulu.
CRC intends to construct 6,000 transitional homes in Aceh by year end 2005 working in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a further 2,500 permanent houses on Nias during this year and in 2006, and an additional 4,000 units in Aceh Province completed by 2007.
Netherland Red Cross support Soroptimist project in Lamreh village, part of 'kemukiman' Kreung Raya. Lead by businesswoman Lily Kasoem, owner of Lily Kasoem optical ( www.lilykasoem.com ), the Jakarta branch of Soroptimist International implement the projects first phase to build 80 houses in Lamreh, a hill above Malahayati port. The other 115 will be built in land at the foot of Malahayati hill.
When the homes are built, perhaps as soon as October of this year, villagers will receive the houses by a lottery system in order to avoid disputes.
On August 21, Soroptimist has scheduled to inaugurate the completion of a new elementary school building in Soeharto Hill of Lamreh that will accommodate 250 children ( www.rebuilding-lamreh.org ). © che
