Heavy rain from Sunday until 4 a.m. on Monday has triggered floods in several places in Bae and Mejobo districts in Kudus regency, Central Java. The flooding was to a depth of 25 cm and entered a number of school compounds.

To ensure students were not trapped by subsequent floods, as happened last year, some schools decided to close on Monday and hundreds of students were sent home.

Among the schools that allowed their students to go home early were the Darul Ulum elementary, junior and senior high schools and the SDN 5 state elementary school in Ngembalrejo in Bae district.

“We were asked to go home as the school has closed,” said SDN 5 fifth grader Dimas. Several elementary pupils instead played in the pools of water in the school compound. (***)
