Hundreds of houses belonging to 880 families or 2,957 people in the Teriti and Bekotok areas in Loa Ipuh subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara regency, have flooded, an official said.
The regency’s Disaster Mitigation Agency head, Darmansyah, said on Saturday that the heavy rain and the rising of the Mahakam River caused the downstream Tenggarong River to deluge and engulf the houses.
“Tenggarong city was hit by heavy rains in the last three days,” Darmansyah was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
He said the floods, which have inundated homes with 10 centimeters to 50 cm of floodwater since Friday, had forced some of the residents to take refuge.
