The Angke River burst its banks and flooded at hundreds of houses in South Tangerang and Tangerang on Thursday.

The affected areas include Kayu Gede, Paku Jaya and North Serpong, according to data from the South Tangerang Disaster Mitigating Agency.

“Residents still prefer staying home to taking refuge, even though the floodwater is up to 70 centimeters,” said a local neighborhood unit chief, Romli.

The flooding stopped the traffic on Jl. Raya Graha Bintaro in South Tangerang. Flood waters up to 80 centimeters also paralysed traffic on Jl. KH. Hasyim Ashari and swamped hundreds of houses in the Cileduk Indah housing complex also in Tangerang.

Endang Maturidi of the Tangerang Fire Agency said flood began on Wednesday evening. He said 25 rescue team members had been deployed to the scene.
