Twenty-eight sub-districts in seven out of 10 districts in Jambi city are inundated, data from the Jambi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) show. The flooded districts include Danau Teluk, Jambi Timur, Jelutung, Kota Baru, Pasar Jambi, Pelayangan and Telanaipura.

“Flooding has occurred because the Batanghari River has overflowed due to the heavier volume of water upstream,” said BPBD Jambi’s disaster alert unit head, M.Darmanto.

The flooding began on Sunday.

Dalmanto said the water depth at the Tanggo Rajo water level observation office on the Batanghari River had increased to 14.3 meters as of Wednesday.

“It’s already at alert level three,” he said.

The residents of 1,200 households have taken temporary shelter at centers in Perumahan Pematang Sulur, Buluran, Sungai Putri, Penyengat Rendah, Legok and Sijenjang.

“The flooding has affected economic and social activities of local people as transportation has been paralyzed,” said Dalmanto.

Jambi BPBD office has prepared eight humanitarian posts, namely Post I in front of the governor’s official residence, Post II in Buluran, Post III in Legok, Post IV in Sungai Putri, Post V in Danau Teluk, Post VI in Pelayangan, Post VII in Penyengat Rendah Sipin and Post VIII in Pematang Sulur.
