HIGHLIGHTS
- On 4th October 2010, at around 08.30 local time, heavy rain unleashed flash floods and mudslides hit the eastern part of Indonesia's Wasior sub-district, Teluk Wondama District, West Papua Province.
- The flash flood affecting 8 villages in Teluk Wondama District, namely Wasior I, Wasior II, Rado, Moru, Maniwak, Manggurai, Wondamawi and Wondiboy villages.
- Crisis Center, Ministry of Health reported 77 people dead, 147 severely injured, 461 slightly injured and 103 people missing.
- Hundreds of homes were also damaged when a river burst its banks, sweeping away residents in a fast-moving wall of sludge, rocks and heavy logs.
- Rescue official reported that victims of the flash floods and mudslide were buried in a mass grave on Wednesday, 6th October 2010.
- At the moment, electricity is still cut off; transportation and communication is still disrupted due to collapsed bridges in the affected site, and up to 6th October 2010, activities in Wasior are still paralyzed.
- Ministry of Health through Provincial Health Office, District Health office and Port Health office has responded the situation by providing integrated medical services as well as distributing logistic to affected location.
- MOH, Regional Crisis Center of Papua, Provincial Health Office of West Papua and District Health Office of Teluk Wondama are in close collaboration with WHO Indonesia to monitor the situation and to provide integrated Emergency Health Services according to standard Operating Procedures.
- Landslides and flooding are common in Indonesia, and had killed dozens of people every year.
