Flash flood hits East Lombok

A flash flood inundated Sambelia district, East Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday night following heavy rainfall in the area.

“We have not yet been updated on the current situation on the ground. The regent left to inspect the location last night,” East Lombok spokesman Iswan Rahmadi said on Wednesday.

Iswan, however, cited early information from local district officials saying that the flood had swept away a bridge connecting Sambelia and Sembalun districts.

The district officers had reportedly evacuated the residents to higher ground, but no precise number of evacuees was immediately available, Iswan said.

West Nusa Tenggara Disaster Mitigation Agency head Husnuddin Achsyid said he had deployed the agency’s officers to the site to help the flood-affected residents.

“I haven’t received updates on the number of houses, residents or public facilities affected by the flood yet,” he said.

Sambelia, located about 130 kilometers from the province’s capital Mataram, was struck by a flash flood in 2006. The flood claimed two lives and destroyed hundreds of houses and left more than 2,000 people homeless. (iwa)
