On July 18, the Government of Japan decided
to extend emergency assistance in kind (tents, sleeping mats, blankets,
simplified water tanks, water purifiers, polyethylene containers, plastic
sheets), equivalent to about 13 million yen (including freight cost) to
the Government of Indonesia, in respect to an earthquake in the Indian
Ocean and the resulting large-scale tsunami hitting the Southwest coast
of Java Island.
According to the announcement by the
Government of Indonesia, this earthquake and resulting tsunami caused more
than 300 people died and more than 30, 000 in missing, thereof, which figures
will possibly be worsened.
Under these circumstances in which many of the victims are forced to lead a difficult life, the Government of Indonesia has requested the Government of Japan an emergency assistance.
The Government of Japan extending heartfelt sympathy to the victims, has decided to provide this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view and taking account of the friendly relations between Japan and Indonesia.
