A cyclone damaged more than 100 houses in two hamlets, Welahan and Paren, in Mayong district, Jepara, Central Java, on Monday, no casualty were reported.
“The cyclone came with heavy rain and tore down my house,” said Suripah, 75. She added that she would move-in to her son’s house before she rebuilds hers.
The cyclone lasted only 10 minutes, but damaged 93 houses in Welahan and 21 houses in Paren. “Roof tiles flew off during the cyclone,” said one of the residents Ali Fauzan, as quoted by tempo.co.
Jepara Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency deployed officials to evacuate residents and remove fallen trees.
“Our Search and Rescue team was directly deployed after hearing the news,” the agency official, Mohammad Toha said.
Currently, he said there were 16 districts in Jepara that were prone to disasters such as floods, cyclones and sea abrasion. (iwa)
