Ottawa -- The Honourable Diane Marleau, Minister for International Cooperation and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, announced today that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide $16.4 million in assistance for people facing serious food shortages in Indonesia.

"An estimated 7.5 million people face severe food shortages in Indonesia because of fall-out from the region's economic crisis and drought, " said Madame Marleau. "Canada is determined to provide support to people in the country so they can make it through this difficult period."

CIDA will fund four new food security projects to assist Indonesians living in regions most affected by food shortages caused by drought and the economic crisis. The initiatives will address malnutrition and other health-related problems. These projects are part of an overall support package of $280 million to Indonesia, announced by the Government of Canada in March 1998.

CIDA's contribution will help provide support to CARE Canada and World Vision Canada for their emergency feeding programs, and funding for a World Vision Canada effort to provide food aid to tuberculosis patients. CIDA will also support a project to fortify wheat flour with iron, zinc and other minerals and vitamins in order to decrease micronutrient malnutrition, especially among women and children.

The four initiatives complement CIDA's bilateral aid program to Indonesia which addresses issues such as protection of the environment, promotion of human rights and democratic development.

Funding for the food assistance announced today was provided for in the February 1998 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework
