BRR: Indonesian Parliament approves tsunami reconstruction budget

Banda Aceh, Indonesia-Relief -- The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) approved a total of Rp 8.2 trillion (US$863 million) for the year 2005 to be used for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Aceh and Nias.

Negotiations ended late Saturday evening, June 4, 2005, after several days of meetings between the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) for Aceh and Nias and officials of the Ministry of Finance, BRR said on its weekly update.

In the meetings, also attended by ten representatives of DPR's Commission B, which was assigned to review BRR's budget, each of BRR's Deputies presented their work programs and the budget needed to carry out work in their individual sectors.

"The budget approved by DPR will speed up the rehabilitation and reconstruction process to meet the real needs of the people," said Junius Hutabarat, Deputy of Planning and Programming, who also acted as BRR's Deputy team leader.

Of the Rp 8.2 trillion approved, Rp 3.9 trillion (US$410 million) will be funded from debt moratoriums and Rp 4.3 trillion (US$453 million) will be funding by grants and debt reallocations.

DPR, the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) and independent auditors will monitor the use of the funds. BRR will operate under the highest professional standards and will uphold the principles of accountability and transparency in carrying out reconstruction activities. © lan
