INDONESIA

On 15 January 2025, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) elevated the alert status of Mount Ibu, located in West Halmahera, North Maluku, to Level IV, the highest alert level. In response, PVMBG has advised local communities to refrain from any activities within a 6-kilometer radius of the mountain's summit. Following the announcement, the West Halmahera District Government declared a 14-day emergency response status, effective from 15 to 28 January 2025. Emergency measures included the evacuation of approximately 3,000 people (900 households) from six villages in the Tabaru Subdistrict to five designated temporary shelter sites within the district. Masks and immediate relief assistance have been distributed, and danger zone signs have been installed to ensure public safety.

MYANMAR

The security situation across Myanmar remains fragile, with intensified airstrikes in multiple regions causing significant civilian casualties. According to initial reports, ongoing airstrikes and clashes between 15 and 17 January in the Southeast allegedly resulted in the deaths of 9 people, including displaced people, and injured 31 more. In Rakhine, 3 airstrikes in Mrauk-U Township on 18 January reportedly killed 28 people and injured 25 more. In the Northwest, airstrikes between 16 and 19 January reportedly resulted in the deaths of 19 civilians and injured approximately 41 more. The protection of civilians remains a grave concern as conflict-affected communities continue to face heightened risks amid the violence and limited access to essential services. All parties to the conflict are reminded of their legal obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.
