ASEAN Weekly Disaster Update Week 16 | 13 – 19 April 2026

REGIONAL SUMMARY:

During the sixteenth week of 2026, a total of 25 disaster events were reported across the ASEAN region, including floods, landslides, storms, and wind-related disasters in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In Indonesia, Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) reported disaster incidents across Aceh, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, North Maluku, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA) reported storms and winds in Kedah. In Thailand, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported storms and winds in Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani, Buriram, Sisaket, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Chaiyaphum, Lop Buri, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Pathom, Roi Et, Phetchabun, Prachin Buri, Sakon Nakhon, Surin, and Saraburi. Lastly, in Viet Nam, Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported storms and wind-related disasters in Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Gia Lai, and Lam Dong.

HIGHLIGHT:

In Viet Nam, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail occurred from the night of 15 April to 18 April. According to VDDMA, a total of one fatality, one missing person, and four injured persons have been reported. Significant damage to housing was recorded, with three houses completely destroyed and around 5.5K houses damaged or with roofs blown off. The agriculture sector also sustained notable impacts, with approximately 1.7K ha of rice, crops, and fruit trees damaged, along with the loss of one head of livestock and 1.2K poultry. In addition, 15 schools, one health facility, and 11 auxiliary and community structures were affected. The total estimated economic loss exceeds VND 57.34 billion (approximately USD 2.29 million), although figures from several provinces are still being compiled. Relevant authorities are undertaking necessary actions to respond to the situation, support affected communities, and continue assessing and consolidating impact and damage data.

HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:

For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicated medium to high 7-day average rainfall across Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. As of this reporting period, Tropical Cyclone As of this reporting, there is no active tropical cyclone being monitored in the ASEAN region (JTWC).

GEOPHYSICAL:

Four (4) significant earthquakes (M>5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG). Mount Dempo (alert level II), Anak Krakatau (alert level II), Semeru (alert level III), Lewotobi Laki-laki (alert level II), Ibu (alert level II), and Dukono (alert level II) in Indonesia, and Taal (alert level 1), Mayon (alert level 3), Kanlaon (alert level 2), and Bulusan (alert level 1) volcanoes in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

OUTLOOK:

According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, drier than usual conditions are predicted over southeastern Mainland Southeast Asia, the northwestern Maritime Continent, and northern Borneo. For the regional assessment of extremes, there is no increase in chance of very heavy rainfall for ASEAN region; however, there is still a moderate increase in chance of extreme hot conditions over southern Mainland Southeast Asia and Peninsular Malaysia. ENSO-neutral conditions are now present, with a transition to El Nino conditions likely in June-July 2026, however, there is still a chance of ENSO-neutral conditions continuing as models have lower accuracy at this time of the year. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is neutral. Models predict neutral IOD state to persist until June 2026.
