Ambon Flood and Landslides 8 August 2012

General Update

As of August 8, 2012, the displaced people have begun to return to their homes and cleaning the debris, although many of them especially in the most damaged areas like Batu Merah village, Hative Kecil village, Uriretu (Kadewatan and Tanah Tinggi) village and Batu Meja (Skip area) village do not have any possession left since their houses were swept and washed away by the flood.

The people started to get sick, mostly with upper tract respiratory infection, skin disease and diarrhoea.
The most needed items are clean water, blanket and mattress.

Government response

The government had gave prepared food packages and provide medical services and help with cleaning the debris of the flood in the most stricken areas.
The food were supplied from the BPBD (District Disaster Management Agency) and Social Department, while the army is helping with cleaning the debris.

Local NGO response

KPM (Koalisi Pengungsi Maluku- Moluccas Displaced People Coalition) is responding to the flood by coordinating aid distribution by NGOs with the government, preventing overlap in aid distribution and better targeting.

YEU response

YEU sent 150 packages of family hygiene kits (blankets, tooth brushes and tooth pastes, soaps and detergent, nail clipper and towels) for 150 families that will be distributed by KPM. The package will reach Ambon on 11 August 2012.
