A Magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred on 5 August 2018 18:46 hrs (UTC +7), with epicenter at a depth of 10 km and located at 8 o22’12.0” S & 116o28’48.00” E (inland), in the area of West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia (BMKG). The earthquake felt in Lombok, Bali and Sumbawa Island with the reported intensity around II-VIII MMI. Around 3,848,000 people exposed to intensity V-VII MMI (InaSAFE, BNPB).

Despite being an inland earthquake, Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS, BMKG) immediately triggered tsunami warning for North Lombok and East Lombok regencies, with a maximum potential tsunami height of 0.5 m. A minor tsunami with maximum height 0.135 m was observed in Carik, North Lombok Regency. As of 5 Aug 2018. 20.50 (UTC +7), BMKG has cancelled the tsunami warning.

Local governments have assisted the exposed population in evacuation process. Lost of power was reported across East Lombok Regency.

The earthquake occurred one week after a strong M 6.4 earthquake hit the same area on 29 July 2018 and resulted in 17 fatalities, 365 injuries, 8,871 people displaced & more than 14,000 houses damaged (BNPB). West Nusa Tenggara Province is still in emergency response period until 11 August 2018 (BNPB).

AHA Centre has established communication with National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) of Indonesia. Indonesian Armed Forces & National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) are deploying 3 Hercules to the disaster area (ETD 6 August 2018 morning). At this point, there is no indication that international assistance will be required.
