Appeal Number: #699-K
Appeal Amount: $160,198
SITUATION: An earthquake of 7.2-magnitude struck West Java Province on September 2, 2009. (A latter earthquake struck Sumatra Sept. 30, and a separate appeal will be issued for that disaster.) The Sept. 2 earthquake was followed by approximately 22 aftershocks. Authorities said, as of Sept. 6, that 69 people died, 28 remained missing and 370 people were severely from the earthquake.
CWS RESPONSE: Church World Service and its fellow Action by Churches Together International Indonesian partners, Yakkum Emergency Unit and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana di Indonesia, have provided relief food, emergency shelter and non-food relief assistance since the quake struck.
Using pre-positioned supplies, CWS had provided a total of 280 CWS blankets, 166 tarpaulins, 2,320 meters of rope, 780 mats, 50 mosquito nets, and 64 family tents. Other ACT International members have provided an additional 300 tarpaulins, as well as 500 hygiene kits, 200 baby kits, and 50 blankets.
Now CWS plans to provide shelter assistance to support 900 households (4,500 persons) in some of the worst-affected villages. CWS will focus on four villages: Cikelet Village, Cikelet Sub-district, Garut District; Sinarbakti Village, Pamengpeuk Sub-district, Garut District; Kertanegla Village, Bojonggambir Sub-district, Tasikmalaya District; Sarangmukti Village, Salawu Sub-district, Tasikmalaya District.
CWS has targeted these four villages because most of the houses there were destroyed by the quake; only limited amounts of aid have reached the villages; and access to these villages is also limited given road conditions.
The shelter will be made from bamboo sheet walls, beams, and tarpaulin roofing.
BUDGET: $160,198 - includes $143,297 in direct assistance costs. The balance is for transportation, warehousing and staff costs.
Contributions to support this emergency appeal may be sent to your denomination or to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN, 46515. Please designate: 2009 INDONESIA (WEST JAVA) EARTHQUAKE (699-K)
