SITUATION REPORT: West Bengal Floods

SITUATION: Incessant and torrential monsoon rains, beginning in late July, have inundated large areas of Midnapore district in West Bengal, India. An estimated 16,000 houses have collapsed due to the flooding caused by the heavy rains and approximately 100,000 people are homeless.

In addition, drinking water sources, roads, embankments, infrastructure and croplands have been extensively damaged or destroyed. There are immediate and acute needs of vulnerable familes for food, temporary shelter, and assistance in rebuilding their homes.

RESPONSE: Action by Churches Together (ACT) has issued an appeal (# ASIN74) for $422,200 to support the Lutheran World Service India Program, which is seeking funding to provide food rations, supplemental feeding, water wells and housing construction materials to an estimated 5,000 families in the Midnapore district. CWS is contacting Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), an Indian partner of both CWS and ACT, to determine its possible involvement in the response. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 456-1310.
