Torrential rain in Vizag: Bridge washed away at Bathukammavagu

HYDERABAD/ADILABAD: Seventy two villages in Vemanapalli and Kotapalli mandals in Adilabad district were cut off from the rest of the world after the bridge on Bathukammavagu was washed away in flood waters near Chennur on Thursday.

Road link to 25 villages also got snapped following the collapse of a bridge in Gorlapalli in Adilabad. The rains accompanied by strong gales wreaked havoc in Visakhapatnam, West Godavari and Warangal districts.

The bridge on Bathukammavagu breached due to incessant downpour in the last two days in Adilabad district. In another incident, 25 villages lost connectivity with other areas following damage to the Gollapalli bridge. Streams, rivulets and other water bodies are brimming with rain water. Many villagers are facing isolated kind of situation because of the torrential rain. Normal life was paralyzed in Chennur, Asifabad, Sirpur and Mancherial areas due to the heavy downpour in the last 48 hours.

While rain waters entered a few low-lying areas in Visakhapatnam city, Bhimavaram and Amalapuram towns, 16 fishermen boats were washed away into the sea waters as strong gales hit the Visakhapatnam coast on Thursday. The fisherfolk tried to retrieve the boats, but in vain; they suffered heavy damages. Sources said the loss was to the tune of Rs 1 crore. This include wrecked boats and huge fishing nest. Even fishermen tried to save it, the attempt was a failure. With the pressure area formed over the Bay, the sea was rough at several places along the coast.
